We are grateful to bring our community together in Milwaukee, which stands on the traditional land of the Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Ojibwe, Odawa, Fox, Sauk, and Menominee peoples along the southwest shores of Michigami, North America’s largest system of freshwater lakes, where the Milwaukee, Menominee, and Kinnickinnic rivers meet. The people of Wisconsin’s sovereign Anishinaabe, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Oneida, and Stockbridge Munsee nations remain present in Milwaukee and its surrounding lands. Indigenous people were forcibly and coercively removed from this land through violence and cessation treaties, including the 1833 Treaty of Chicago. As organizers and visitors, we respectfully acknowledge the past, present, and future caretakers of Milwaukee and their unbroken connection the lands and waters making up and surrounding our host city. We encourage our attendees to visit Unceded Milwaukee to learn more about the Indigenous history and present of Milwaukee.
